In today’s tech-driven world, homeowners are increasingly seeking seamless integration between their smart home systems and architectural elements. This is especially true for windows and doors, which play a crucial role in security, comfort and energy efficiency.

Staying ahead of the curve on smart home integration is essential to meet your clients’ evolving needs. We interviewed Marvin, a leading window and door manufacturer, to explore the latest advancements in smart home technology and how you can incorporate them into your designs and projects.

How can smart windows and doors complement the overall design and functionality of a space?

Smart windows, doors and skylights provide homeowners with convenience and peace of mind with technology-enabled solutions that allow them to effortlessly open their home at the push of a button or through simple voice activation.

What innovative or unique applications have you seen for smart windows and doors in residential projects?

The newly launched Marvin Connected Home provides industry-first window, door and skylight automation on the Marvin Modern product line. Automated casement and awning windows, a multi-slide door and the Awaken skylight can all be controlled through the Marvin Home app, Amazon Alexa, Control4 or Crestron Home so homeowners can use the technology offerings they most prefer. On-unit control or wall switches also provide the utmost in flexibility.

What are the biggest challenges when integrating smart windows and doors into existing structures or new builds?

Installation can be a notable consideration if products haven’t been designed with simplicity at the forefront.  We find that the most seamless installations require only a single additional hole to accommodate wiring to the window or door.

Partnering with smart home integrators is also a critical step to ensuring a home’s full integration can be thoughtfully approached across all suppliers for optimal results across an entire home.

What advice would you give to architects and designers considering using smart windows and doors in their projects?

Leverage a smart home integrator partner early in the process to think through the design and planning considerations for a smart home. And seek out a window and door manufacturer with experience, tested and certified products and a strong product warranty.

What are the biggest concerns or reservations when it comes to integrating smart windows and doors within a design?

Smart home products can seem intimidating or like they may not fit the aesthetic, but automated and non-automated units can sit side-by-side with identical profiles with almost no visual differentiation.

What are the key benefits when recommending smart windows and doors?

Through research with thousands of homeowners and professionals, we discovered people are missing out on the benefits of opening their windows. The process can be time consuming and sometimes even frustrating when a quick rain kicks up after a homeowner has spent time opening windows they now need to shut. Worse yet is if a homeowner is away from home and concerned about the safety or security of their home.

Smart solutions alleviate these concerns and make windows easier to use and enjoy, which is important as we better understand how air and light significantly impact our sleep conditions and how we feel at home. From on-unit sensors that detect and respond to moisture to the ability to confirm windows are closed and locked from afar, smart windows and doors offer peace of mind and the flexibility to seamlessly open a home for better living.
