What are the fall home design trends you foresee this season that builders, architects and remodelers should keep in mind?
Interior Design and Colors
ProVia: Warm hues like terracotta, burnt orange and earthy browns are always in style for fall and infuse a home with warmth all year round. ProVia offers a multitude of rich exterior paint colors for vinyl windows and patio doors, including Burnt Sienna, Rustic Bronze, Antique and Tudor Brown. Our Aeris™ wood-clad vinyl window and patio door frames incorporate authentic hardwood for a classic look that evokes the beauty of fall. This year we’ve introduced new stains, like Natural Bark on Cherry, English Chestnut on Oak and a personal favorite, Aged Barrel on Oak.
Pella: In the design world, white colors have been warming without yellowing. We are also seeing chocolate browns come back into style and more traditional color parings in non-traditional ways. For example, matte, warm and neutral colors and cozy textures being paired with antique metals, plus fun colors and patterns being paired in both modern and traditional settings.
We also continue to see a personalization of space and heavy use of wallpaper. Windows are being highlighted in design through fun colors and trim detail. Additionally, we see a rise in all elements of the long-standing trend of Scandinavian Modern design.

What are the fall home design trends you foresee this season that builders, architects and remodelers should keep in mind?
Construction Code Changes
Pella: Trends in home construction are being influenced by code changes, home hardening and energy efficiency.
The biggest code changes are the 2024 International Energy Conservation Codes (IECC) and the 2024 International Wildland Urban Interface Codes (IWUIC). The IECC 2024 code is a step forward in reducing energy consumption and mitigating the environmental impact of buildings. Builders, architects and developers need to be aware of the new standards and practices which continue to push for lower u-factors and solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC) in windows and doors.
Pella’s products meet these needs across material types with options that meet ENERGY STAR® 7.0 and can go as low as 0.15 in certain materials to meet project performance expectations. The IWUIC establishes regulations to minimize fire spread in wildland-urban interface areas. Although regionally dependent, this code provides insights for both builders and homeowners and creates new dialogue as more areas begin to see the threat of wildfire.
Home hardening is a new term being used to describe areas where new construction buildings are managed with codes and compliance. Retail and replacement are encouraged as preventative measures to reduce fire spread and flooding. This means that many features in and around homes may change, including windows and doors. To help with these requirements, Pella has heat-resistant glazing packages and performs tests on designs to understand water management.
After an increasingly hot summer for most of the United States, energy efficiency will remain top of mind for builders and homeowners. Almost every region has experienced heat dome effects and moving into winter, temperatures could bring unseasonably warm or cold weather. Are there any trends from last season you foresee phasing out in 2024?
ProVia: The trend for a while now has been a clean, white and clutter-free exterior color scheme. White with black trim is still certainly extremely popular and gives a simple yet sophisticated vibe, but this year we’re seeing colors moving toward a warmer, mono-chromatic palette and more lived-in design. People want their homes to feel cozy and hospitable, and warm brown palettes offer a welcoming experience.
Pella: We see that new constructions are moving away from the farmhouse design.

As daylight hours shorten, how can windows, doors and skylights help homeowners maximize natural light penetration during fall?
ProVia: Picture windows, shaped windows and patio doors can be used to great effect to illuminate indoor spaces, flooding them with natural light. They can make a room seem bigger and allow homeowners to enjoy fuller views of their outdoor scenery.

How do you see fall design trends influencing the future development of windows, doors and skylights?
ProVia: In keeping with the trend of biophilic design – integrating nature in interior spaces – we’ll see an increase in popularity of larger windows of any configuration and multi-panel sliding glass or French patio doors that allow more natural light inside. Architectural shapes can offer homeowners additional options for exterior aesthetics. Shaped windows – round and oval, cathedral, octagon, eyebrow, half-and quarter-round – take curb appeal to another level, adding charm and elegance to the façade of a home.
