From boosting the curb appeal of their home, to providing light and ventilation, doors play an important role in a house’s overall design. As an architect and remodeler, it’s important to keep a pulse on the latest design trends with insight as to how homeowners are using their doors, and what aesthetics they desire. For example, the pandemic has greatly influenced how homeowners live, work and recharge in their homes, with doors playing a critical role in defining spaces as well as connecting them. Given that there’s more people in a household working or studying from home (thus being at home at the same time), the design of the floor plan is key, and has become more intentional than in many pre-pandemic designed homes.

The macro-trends driving home design shifts reflect a desire to reconnect with nature, calm the senses and return to glamour.

Nature-Inspired Doors

Entering 2022, glass is a major player. Contemporary doors combined with glass enhance the connection to nature that homeowners seek within their homes. Whether located in the living room, or being the front door, homeowners are preferring doors that blend the indoor and outdoor, while adding charm and character to their space. With a simple design, muted stain choices and glass to help natural light flow through the home, this door design emphasizes the ongoing theme of naturalism. Homeowners continue to pursue a connection with the outdoors, creating that one-of-a-kind experience with nature.

Minimalist Doors

This trend responds to the request from homeowners craving a sanctuary. Featuring designs with glass to maximize light and clean lines to calm the senses, these simple doors add comfort and warmth to the home, with subtle details that soothe rather than stimulate. It is a more palatable version for the everyday homeowner, one that wishes to achieve a clean and delicate setting to quiet their minds. Minimalist doors can enlarge the home and become a point of interest by enriching the environment with its simplicity.

Glamorous Doors

This is perhaps the most unique design style that emerged since the pandemic. With rounded and arched forms, implied panels and refined darks, this door design brings in elements of the roaring 20s. Just like in the past where homeowners craved a return to a glamorous life after the 1918 flu, today’s consumers are seeking to be more expressive through their home. They’re gravitating toward a blend of bold color palettes and post-pandemic practicality, resulting in simple silhouettes juxtaposed with dramatic details and contrasting hues.

With life going back to some normalcy and homeowners shifting their habits once again, these design trends respond well to the demand of functionality, simplicity, naturalness, and originality coming from consumers— now and in the future.
